Docklands Studios Melbourne is proud to welcome Wilderness, a new independent Australian feature from writer-director Martin McKenna, now in production on our stages.

Produced by Mat Govoni and Lisa Wang with executive producer Deb Barlow, the film stars Mirrah Foulkes, Yael Stone, George Mason and Fiona Choi.

Although set across Victoria’s High Country on the lands of the Taungurong, Waveroo, Jaitmatang, Kurnai and Wooiworung Peoples, much of the alpine environment is being recreated inside the NantStudios LED volume in Stage 3.

This approach will reduce remote travel, vehicle emissions and the impact of location filming in fragile landscapes, and the stage is powered by 100% renewable electricity from SEC Victoria.

Sustainability will be embedded across the production. Working with specialists from Sustainable Film Australia and Sustainable Living Tasmania, the team is decarbonising the shoot, tracking emissions and pursuing BAFTA albert certification.

Initiatives include battery-powered lighting and generators, HVO fuel and predominantly vegetarian catering, supported by membership of Sustainable Screens Australia.

McKenna says the virtual production infrastructure has been inspiring: “The technology serves the story, and the sustainability benefits serve the future of our industry.”

Supported by VicScreen’s Victorian Screen Incentive, Wilderness is a proudly local and independent production demonstrating how filmmaking can have both creative freedom and high environmental standards.
