Horror heavyweights James Wan and Leigh Whannell have brought their blockbuster Insidious franchise home, with the sixth instalment now filming at Docklands Studios Melbourne.

While the spine-tingling action unfolds in our super stage (Stage 6), Melbourne’s moody period architecture doubles for New England.

Two of Victoria’s most successful filmmakers, Wan and Whannell are producing this Sony Pictures and Blumhouse thriller alongside Jason Blum and Oren Peli – the latest chapter in a franchise that has grossed more than USD $740 million worldwide since 2010.

The production is backed by the Victorian Screen Rebate and the Federal Government’s Location Offset, and is set to inject more than AUD $29 million into the local economy, creating 513 jobs for Victorians, including 205 crew positions and 14 Heads of Department.

Whannell, who shot his 2018 cyber-thriller Upgrade at Docklands Studios, says: “It’s a dream to bring an Insidious film back to my hometown.”

And horror fans have another project to look forward to – Stake Out has just wrapped at Docklands Studios Melbourne, telling the story of an ex-couple who discover a murder suspect is harboring secrets far more sinister than they realized.

Starring Brenton Thwaites, Charlee Fraser and Danny Huston, the Princess Pictures feature written and directed by brothers Ben and Paul China employed more than 130 Victorian screen workers.

They join a growing list of recent genre productions shot at the studio, from Late Night with the Devil and Together to Saccharine, cementing our reputation as a hub for horror.

As Jason Blum puts it: “Melbourne is an incredible city for filmmaking – its mix of world-class crews, cutting edge facilities, and rich creative culture made it the perfect home for our next Insidious film. We love being here and are grateful for the support we’ve received from the local film community.”

Together (2025) and Late Night with the Devil (2023) both premiered on the festival circuit before being picked up for cinema release.
